HEIC to JPG Conversion Guide
Everything you need to know about converting Apple HEIC photos to universally compatible JPG format.
What Is HEIC Format?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra. It uses the HEVC (H.265) codec to compress images, producing files roughly half the size of equivalent JPEGs while maintaining the same visual quality.
While HEIC is excellent for saving storage space on Apple devices, it is not universally supported. Windows applications, many web platforms, older image editors, and some social media sites cannot open HEIC files directly, making conversion to JPG necessary for sharing and compatibility.
HEIC vs JPG Comparison
| Feature | HEIC | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | HEVC (H.265) | DCT-based |
| File Size | ~50% smaller | Larger (baseline) |
| Quality | Excellent | Good to excellent |
| Compatibility | Apple ecosystem | Universal |
| Transparency | Supported | Not supported |
When to Convert HEIC to JPG
Convert your HEIC photos to JPG when you need to share them on platforms that don't support HEIC, upload to websites or social media, open them in older image editing software, or send them to non-Apple users. JPG is the most widely supported image format — it works everywhere.
